Firewire PCMCIA card not detected by IBM Thinkpad but Dell OK.
I've picked up a BlueAngel Firewire Cardbus PCMCIA card.
It works ok in a Dell laptop running Windows XP.
But when I put it into my IBM Thinkpad T41 running Windows XP it is not detected.
The Windows Event Log shows:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Pcmcia
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10
Date: 6/09/2004
Time: 3:15:39 PM
User: N/A
Computer: KIDHAZY-T41P
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 10 ) in Source ( Pcmcia ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: \Device\Pcmcia0.
Other Firewire PCMCIA cards work fine in the IBM Thinkpad. I've updated the Thinkpad to the latest BIOS and it still doesn't see the card.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
kidhazy

Well with some hints from the forum I managed to solve my problem.
The issue was the Thinkpad Bios had a setting:
PCI Bus Power Management (stops the PCI bus clock automatically when there are no activities)
The default setting is Automatic. When I flipped this to Disabled, the BlueAngel Firewire PCMCIA card is detected automatically.
Obviously something different between the Firewire PCMCIA cards where some can and cannot handle this PCI Power setting.
Thanks,
kidhazy.

Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

So I just wrote another note on another very similar thread on something I only just figured out - code 10 normally means no resources in a bios context (so Irq not available) - with usb & firewire you can extend this to include insufficient power also
