Unhappy F:\ is not accessible—incorrect function

    Hi Guys,

Recently purchased and installed a LG GSA-4081B (an oem dvd/cd reader/writer combo drive). Using a P4 2.0, 512 megs ram, 64mb geforce 4 mx computer from dell, figured it'd be trouble free as the drive was advertised as 'plug and play'.

Playing dvd movies proved to go smoothly. Everything lookin good. However, problems soon arose. When i inserted a blank Maxwell DVD+R into the drive (my F:\), the 'My Computer' screen changed from a DVD drive to a CD-ROM drive...attempting to open this drive...i got the error: "F:\ is not accessible—incorrect function ". Maxwell DVD+R is one of the LG recommended media type for this drive and i tried several of the dvds. Unless they were all broken, i suspect the problem lies elsewhere. I checked out the LG websites for newer drivers and found nothing. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

    Help please!
    Tom

Do you have the latest firmware?
The A104 firmware update increases compatibility with DVD-ROMs
    See here.

Installed the most recent drivers and got the same error. Tried putting a CD-R in there and got the same error. No problems readin when i put in a cd burnt on my normal CD-R drive....

The problem seems to be in identifying/opening blank media...no clue why.

    Here's a pic of "my computer", <img src="http://img4.photobucket.com/albums/0603/Alucard/wtfff.jpg">

A, C, and D drives were already here before. E and F came up when i installed the new drive.

Not knowing too much about computers, might it be any problem with the fact that this lg drive is setup as a slave to my other cd-rw drive?

    Thanks for any help guys.

Make the DVD burner the master and the other the slave. Use a 40 conductor cable, not an 80.

Are you saying that when you installed the DVD burner it appeared as 2 drives?

Yea it showed up as two drives...which is what i assumed was normal for a 'combo' drive...guess it isn't?

as for a 40 and 80 cable...what is the difference between the two? my computer knowledge ain't very good...

i'll try making it master now...be back in a bit hopefully to say how it all went...

    cheers

Hrm, switched em up...on the plus side i can now see that blank dvd+r's are indeed...blank. however, i still can't burn anythin onto em. and for some reason, it changes from a dvd-ram drive to a cd-rom drive when i put in a blank dvd.

argh, and i dont know how to connect to that chatroom either. blargh.

You're not just slapping in a blank DVD-R then going into My Computer to try to look at it, are you? I guess that might work if you're using InCD for packet writing. (Does packet writing work with DVD?)

Have you tried hudsonsmith's firmware update yet? Firmware is not the same as drivers. It will actually update the drives "internals" which seems to be your problem. This drive should never have shown up as two drives to begin with. I doubt now that the cable is the problem (yes Doc..this is something WE like to recommend here, but OEM's like Dell etc all employ 80 pin cables on millions of boxes w/o a glitch).
Listen, if the firmware doesn't help, looks like may have a fault drive.

I have instaled hundreds of all types of combo drives and they have never installed as 2 drives....That is kind of suspicious.

The difference between the 40 and 80 conductor is the number of wires. the 40 that you need to use has kind of fat wires on it. the 80 has 80 smaller wires. You probably have an 80 on your hard drive. If the cable to the DVD burner is the same, you need to change it.

    Thanks, thanks, and thanks!

    Hey guys,

Turns out that the switchin the drive to master thing actually worked out. Being used to being able to burn CDs through windows explorer, i mistakenly thought it'd be the same for DVDs. Turns out i hafta use nero. While the drive still shows up as two seperate drives (the E: of which i've yet to see a use for), i am now, thanks to all your help, able to see and burn DVDs. Once again, thank you all for your time and efforts, i truly appreciate it.

If anyone is curious about the two drive thing, i'm more then willing to tinker around and try to get to the bottom of the problem. Respond here or pm me and we can attempt to figure it out. If not, once again, thanks. The speedy and professional nature of you all is unrivalled by anything else i've seen.

    Cheers,
    Tom

Actually, never assume anything when troubleshooting. Changing to a 40 wire cable will do NO harm, and may actually solve the problem.

But I am in agreement on the firmware thing. If that doesn't solve it, and the latest updates from NERO don't solve it, you likely need a replacement drive.

Umm, he says it's working now. He changed to master and wasn't using Nero to burn.
True, changing the cable will not do any harm, but I was looking at all the problems this person was having, He is still using an 80 pin (maybe) and it works now but still shows up as two drives. I wonder if he has something virtual going on here?
    BTW
Thanks for that tip about never assuming anything when t'shooting. ;-)

All u have to do is right click on ur drive, go to properties then to recording. but default the master drive is the only drieve that can burn cds. So u click on 'enable cd recording on this drive'
