Unable to load drivers - Error 28

    Hi there!

I hope someone can help with my problem. I don't know what else to do. Living in a remote part of Scotland, I am never likely to recieve ADSL and so was very excited to have ISDN installed. However, it onlt worked intermittently for a week or so until an engineer came to fix it.

It turns out that there was a fault with the box and to make matters worse the original engineer who installed the faulty box, gave me an old driver disk. The engineer who discovered these faults gave me the current disk and told me to uninstall the previous drivers and use the new disk.

So there we are, I place the disk in and come to an abrupt halt at the first hurdle during the 'Found New Hardware Wizard'. It claims that although the drivers were installed, there may be an error. Looking in the Device Manager confirms this with the USB device holding onto an exclamation mark for dear life. If I enquire further I receive this:

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
Now I have found some articles which refer to this problem and they suggest that I remove the 'offending' driver from the WINNT/inf file before repeating the new driver installation and choosing/forcing the correct one. Needless to say it doesn't work.

I believe one of your posts here also refers to a similar problem and a suggestion was to update the VIA drivers which I have also done.

Am I doomed to dial up for the rest of my days and reconsider my line of work in graphics or should I move to smelly London and lease a big fat pipe?

I hope you can help. I can offer a Gmail account in return, if you haven't already got them coming out of your ears.

    Cheers

    Will

I was too busy getting the problem down.

I'm running Win 2k with SP 4. If you could list what other info I should supply and where to locate it, I will go looking.

    Cheers

    Red face

Windows 2000 has problems with USB 2.0. I have seen something just like this with HP Printers. I have talked to the High end tech support team and they have said that The drivers for windows 2000 and usb 2.0 will not deliver the correct voltage out to a device. They didnt have a fix other than going to Windows XP Pro witch dose not have the problem.

Unfortunately/fortunetly, his MB does not support USB 2.0, unless he has an add-on PCI card. So, he is OK there.

Try using the Hardware Wizard tell it to Uninstall/Unplug a device then Uninstall a Device. Find the old driver and remove it (you may have to click the Show hidden devices check box). By the way it may be tempting to remove the "UNKNOWN" devices, DO NOT REMOVE THEM!!!!

After you are through with that annoying Wizard go to Device Manager and remove all signs of that USB network device. Then do Action and Scan for hardware changes. Windows should ask you for the driver disk. If not, double click on the newly created device in Device Manger and select the driver tab then click on Update Driver -> Display a list of the know drivers -> Have Disk give it a location of the disk and hopefully it will display the driver you need. Install it and hope it works.

    Good Luck!
