    Strange behaviour with USB memory

    Hello All!

I am new to this forum.

I have just purchased an Attaché USB memory (see http://www.pny-europe.com/uk/flash_attache.asp). Behaviour of the memory is dependant on when it is connected.

    1. If it is connected during computer start-up and not removed at any time, the memory works as expected.

    2. If it is connected when XP is already running, then the OS finds the device, but when trying to access the memory it will freeze the computer. If I disconnect the memory the computer works fine again.

My computer is a Fujitsu-Siemens P4 with XP home edition (Service Pack 1 installed).
I have 6 USB ports. I believe that 4 of them are connected to the mother board and 2 of them are on a separate card. The 2 one the separate card are USB 2.0 and I think the manufacturer is NEC. It does not matter which USB port I use, same behaviour on all.

A friend of mine connected his USB memory to my computer, and it had the same behaviour.

I have other USB devices, e.g. digital camera, and no problems whatsoever.

My best guess it has something to do with the USB drivers, but my knowledge in this area is very limited.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

    /DTK

    Update:

I have disabled all power management (power saving) functions on all USB hubs, but this did not help.

I have also installed KB822603, which is Windows update for SP1. It is suppose to be related to USB issues. This did not help either.

    Update2:
Running XP in fail-safe mode helps the problem, but when enetering normal mode again the problem is back.

    Anyone with any ideas?

    Welcome to Windrivers DTK
Do you know what chipset the fujitsu is - or what the full model number is? I have a feeling you need the motherboard drivers.

Forgot one item in the previous post.

Between number 3 and 4 there should be:

SIS PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
    Manufacturer: SIS
    Driver: 5.1.2600.0 (Microsoft)
