FTP server choice?
I am looking for an FTP server right now. The major problem I'm having is that I have a router with a firewall and I';m having problems setting up the transfer ports. I've done some reading a little while back and I remember it says that FTP transfers use like any port over 1024 or something like that. Is there an FTP program where I can specifically set it to a certain number of ports in a much smaller range? perferably a range where other programs don't use those ports?

I've just been playing with Blackmoon ftp server and you can specify the passive mode port range with that, no problem. In fact I'd be surprised if you have trouble with any of the major ftp servers.

Well ok, for example I've got WarFTP server running right now because I've used it in the past before I got my router/firewall. But it won't let anyone connect, so I assume it's the firewall. So I open the 21 and 20 that are the "traditional" ports for FTP. Then I read it uses a port >1024. How big is the range? all the way to 65000? I'll take a look at Blackmoon and see if it helps.
I just don't wanna "open" a huge range in my firewall just for some very basic ftp access.

Blackmoon was inherited by me, not really a choice but I can confirm 100% that only port 21 is open to connect to it and it works just fine!

WebWeaver is pretty good. It also has a web server built in as well. I don't know if this would work for you, but it is free

Get me a soldering iron and some duct tape, and I'll see what I can do.

Bulletproof FTP Server is also a popular choice for several of my friends who run FTP servers from home.

I tried the Blackmoon server and it's quite a nifty little server. I'll probably stick with that. Thank you everyone for your suggestions; it is greatly appreciated.

try port forwarding, your router should be able to forward any port to a specific machine IP.
I do this on my router and it works fine.

Bulletproof is my choice as it supports user groups.
This means I can restrict folder access given the group settings for any of the users.
You need to forward 2 ports, 20 & 21 to the server.
21 is ftp control & 20 is ftp data

Yeah I knew about those ports but was unfamiliar with pasv and active FTP. Having found a webpage that actually explained it in english I now know to set it to passive .
PS this Blackmoon server is actually quite adept. It has user groups like you mentioned plus a lot of graphical analysis. It's quite easy to setup I will most likely be purchasing a copy of it. I suggest this one is looking for one in the future.
