Question Toshiba Satellite 1800-S203 No Sound

Hello, great forum you got here, and lots of info. Unfortunately I can't find an exact answer to this question.

I bought this computer used from a rental place and It can with WinME. I formatted it for Win98SE and everything is nice and smooth now, except that I have no sound. The Volume Control won't even open, even though it's available from the start menu.

    Model: Satellite-S203
MotherBoard: Toshiba Portable PC Verison A0
    BIOS: Toshiba v2.00
    OS: Win98SE build 4.10.2222

I used Belarc to get these numbers, if you need anymore let me know.

I tried the ALi Audio Accelerator WDM Driver (s108snd8.exe) from Toshiba's web-site, but no joy. I also downloaded all the critical updates using Windows Update and that didn't change anything either.

Any ideas, help, or suggestions you can give me? Thanks in advance for trying.

-Did the sound work in ME before you reformatted?
-Does the sound card show up in device manager? If so, are there any yellow ! or ? or error messages when you open properties?

Yes, it worked when I had it running ME.
It shows upwith a yellow "!" either as the basic "PCI Multimedia Hardware Adapter" or a "!" with the YAMAHA AC-XG Audio Device if I install the driver above.

If I install the ALi driver, there is no "!" but there's also no sound.

Well, it didnt work. I still have the "!".

This computer is an 1800-S203, not a 2410-S203. Could that be why?

    Unhappy

Well, now the "!" is gone but there's still no sound and no access to the Volume Control.

Well lets stop guessing about what sound chip you've got, since Toshiba sure doesn't have it straight. Download Everest http://www.lavalys.com/products/down...ng=en&pageid=3 and post the info under the Multimedia\PCI Audio heading

remove all sound devices in safe mode (press f8) just before windows loads)

    Reboot and try again.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

    crumbs,

This is the best so far. When it boots, now it beeps twice, which it didn't do before. However, it doesn't play any sound once Windows is loaded, and the Volume Control is still missing.

The difference now is, Windows is now finding an "Unknown Device", the sound card, and the software modem.

Argh, I'm getting closer, I just can't seem to seal the deal. Thanks for all the help.

The driver you need is at Toshiba's site, see post above, that is the ALi driver for your machine. Try it after you unload the others that you have installed. Remove all from with-in safe-mode, than reboot, say no to all after boot. Than run s108snd8.exe

the unknown device is more than likley the nic Card Find That HERE

    Sound driver HERE

All drivers can be found at TOSHIBA site HERE make sure to apply win98 filter or you will end up with all XP drivers
