Thumbs down Aopen FM56-PM Voice/Fax Modem

    S.O.S. S.O.S.

    Some Please help!
(I barely got to this page!)

Anyway, i've been using this modem for quite a while now (almost a year) and it seems to be giving up on me. It stalls about every 5-10 minutes and disconnects at random times. I checked to see if idle disconnect was on, nope. I checked all the settings, nothing wrong there. I also checked to see wether there is a problem with my ISP but it seems to work fine on other people's computers i try, even with the same modem!

However, when i try to use it at home, it gives up on me occasionally.

My computers configuration is as follows:
    Asus P3V4X motherboard
    Pentium 3 667Mhz Proc
    192 MB RAM (PC133)
NVidia Cougar Video Edition (AGP)TNT2 M64
    Soundblaster Live! MP3+
    MPEG decoder
    NIC
    Firewire card
    and the modem
    running Windows ME

Running other operating systems doesn't help!

Who ever know how to fix this problem, PLEASE HELP!

    Thank You!

if the modem seems to work fine in other peoples computer, and you're sure its not a diver problem or other conflict then it probable your phone line. has the phone company been doing any work in your area? what is your connection speed now? what was it before? do have any static on the line during a voice call? if so that will really hurt your net connection and cause slow connections and drop offs.

I'm quite sure that there hasen't been any telephone line repaires, etc done in the area, as my brothers computer which is just in the other room never disconnects automatically or hangs and his is a 5 year old 33.6

But, as for my connection speed, I connect at around 31200 kbps

you said everything worked fine until you added the nic well i would check for an irq problem with the modem and nic or move the nic to a different pci slot

ok mate!, you know when you have a irq conflict problem... when you see that your modem is installed FINE but when you try to dial or to use the diagnostic... it pops up a error saying: "port already open" that means there is another DEVICE using that irq!

also you can have problems if you assign the same input/output allocation to two devices!...

that happened to me when i was having problems with my Viking pccard and the FREAKING com5!(i assigned the pccard to another input/output allocation using the device manager/computer propertis/input/output(I/O) radial button!)

    Right click My computer
    select properties
    Device manager
    Highlight Computer
    Click properties.

This will give you a lists of all your resources.

You can also expand the modem list and highlight the modem and click properties and check the resource tab.

but that NOT always tells, that you're having device conflicts... specially if you have those problems with the input/output and com ports, that is NORMAL under windows!
