My wife, son and I got our 1st Alaska dividend checks today! The fund only paid $918 a piece this year, but still...woohoo!

The money has been spent on 3 airline tickets for a visit back to VA, my pistol, and my wife's pistol and a new bed for my son.

Years ago they put billions of dollars of oil money away into a trust fund that is illegal for anyone to touch. Each year they take the interest and divide it equally among the residents. It's a pretty sweet setup if you ask me. I received five years worth of checks when I was a teenager living up there and ended up using the money as a downpayment on my first house.

Well thank ya. Even though we will be here 3 years on January 14th you have to live here a full calendar year before you get the funds. So we missed by 2 weeks in 2002 (no exceptions). 2003 calendar year was the first year we're eligible. The $918 per person is the smallest payout they have had in quite a while. The pay out is determined by the price of crude during the year and the stock market fund averaged for the last 3 years. Next years fund should be higher based on oil prices and the stock market.

I think he meant Oklahoma. I disagree tho, I think the worst is Kansas. It's just as flat as Oklahoma, it has more tornadoes (www.tornadostats.com), and the bigger Kansas City is in a state other than Kansas. That's gotta suck and nuthin from Oklahoma is gonna trump that one.

Actually, they average the earnings over a five year span to compute the dividend. They are claiming that next year will be even lower.

I always try to do something "Alaskan" with the dividend.

We leave the day after Thanksgiving for 2 weeks. We are flying into Tri-Cities TN/VA. My wife's folks and my folks both live in the SW part of VA, about ½ hour N of Bristol.
