Cobweb Clearing Thread: 16-bit Sound MS-DOS

    Hiya folks,

I have been wrestling with a technical challenge that I hope you guys can look into for a bit.

    The System: Toughbook CF-71
    The O/S : MS-DOS 6.22
The Mission: Get sound to work in PsyTask Program!

This is for a neuro-feedback clinic. They use an application called Psytask which, among other things, plays audio files as stimuli. The person who owns the laptop has not been able to get sound working at all. He wanted to know if I could help. I told him I'd gladly poke around, but that I haven't touched MS-DOS in literally eight years and couldn't promise quick results.

Using KNOPPIX, I identified the soundchip as the Sound Blaster Pro compatible Yamaha YMF-754. Once I found that out, I was able to locate an application called "setupds" that runs a "set blaster" variable and programs various IRQ and DMA settings for the sound card, FM, MRU, and JOY parameters.

This tool has a BAT file called "LoadTSR," which, at first, checks for the presences of a "ds.ini" file. If it find it and it is not altered (i.e. defaulted), another application, DSDMA, launches and allows you to program individual IRQs and Memory settings for the aspects of the card. It then allows you to run sound tests.

Using this tool, and programming the blaster for 220h, IRQ5, DMA1, and 16-bit DMA5, I have been able to get 8-bit sound to work in Psytask, but not 16-bit. The program reports "Incorrect File Format." All of the 16-bit sound files are WAVs.

But the sound tests in the DSDMA program run a WAV for the 16-bit test and I hear that WAV fine.

The Psytask program has pretty simple configuration options: Address, IRQ, 16-bit DAC (Signed or Unsigned), DMA, DMA 16-bit, SB Type (16 or Pro). I have tried all of the options in there. Setting the SB type to 16 allows the tests that use 16-bit WAVs to run, but no sound emanates.

My "Set Blaster" string is as such:

    Set Blaster=A220 I5 D1 T4 H5

Also: I've copied one of the 16-bit WAVs to a Windows PC and it plays okay.

    Any thoughts? Pretty please?

    Cheers,

    Mike Whalen

The 16-bit DOS driver? That's the item I downloaded. To my knowledge, there's no DOS driver in that exe. Anyway, that's what contains the LOADTSR, DSDMI, etc.

Being a DOS based software I realize that loading it in a windows environment will not help. Do you know if a win32 version of the software exists?

Here are a couple of other questions?

Has this software ever worked with this particular sound card?
If not does the manufacturer recommend a particular audio card?
Is the file a standard PCM wav or is it compressed with a special codec?
You Stated you tested the Sound card with Knoppix. I assume a "live cd". Will the files play on that platform?

Hi. Sorry it's taken me so long to get back.

Yes, the Knoppix was a LIVECD and it does work fine. Yes.

As for the manufacturer ... well, that's hard to do. They're in Russia. Hard to get in touch.

I will take a look at the links. :-)
