Corrupted Word 2000 Document
Hi Gang,
I have a friend who has an updated Word 2000 software program from Office '97. A document that is very important to him is corrupted to where only half the information is present. Its a listing of books. Half the titles are gone.
He says the only thing he has done recently is install a video camera.
He has asked me to help him and I am asking you. So far the only thing I have suggested is reinstalling Word and Office.
Can anyone offer any suggestions to help us. This is a Windows 98 machine.
Thanks,
Orangeman...

Do you want to recover the file, repair the system or both?
have you tried viewing the document on your system to see if its a software problem?
Have they scanned there system with an up to date anti virus recently?

Make a Copy first.
Hello all.. Make a copy of the document first. That way anything you attempt to do will not destroy the original file. Try the copy on another workstation and see if the problem is there.. I'm assuming you've checked for viruses. I would try the software mentioned above and see if anything can be restored on the copy..

Is he sure this is not a back up copy made automatically when last working on the document?

I've used this site http://www.officerecovery.com/word/index.htm to recover documents for clients. The program though is expensive so it depends on how important the data is. Have you tried a google search for "word document repair utility" or similar.
http://www.word-recovery.net/ may be worth looking at. I've not used this but r-studio is superb for data recovery.
Any freeware or shareware programs would be a very useful post!
Good luck.

You might also try opening the file up in OpenOffice/Ability Office/Star Office/Wordperfect or a similar program that imports Word files. I have seen all flavors of MS-Word bork on a corrupted file, only to have a different suite altogether read the file OK.
