Question Can't Print + "Handle is Invalid" + "Internal Error"

I have been unsuccessful in trying to print from several programs, although nothing else suspicious has been noted. The following is what happened as I tried printing from various programs:

Opera 7.50 -- Print preview simply provides no response (sometimes shuts down). Straight print attempt = shutdown w/error msg ""has encountered a problem and needs to close"

    Notepad -- "Handle is invalid."

IE 6.00 -- Print preview shows, but attempt to print leads to msg "There was an internal error."

MS Word 2003 -- Print preview shows, but attempt to print leads to msg "… cannot … problem with current setup"

    I'm using XP Home.

sounds like the windows print spooler service is disabled or at least not active.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

Any idea how to determine for sure? In Control Room under Administrative Tools, Services (local), it says the print spooler startup type is automatic and that it has started.
