    Winsock 2 Error When I Start Mechwarrior 4 w/ Broadband

    Hi Gang,

    I've been running Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance for years with dialup. Recently I switched to Broadband. Now Mechwarrior won't run.

    When I do I encounter an error message:

    "An error was encountered while installing Winsock2. Setup has been cancelled See Setup.log for more information:

    Here is the the text of Winsock2:

    WS2SETUP begin: 10/18/2004 06:16:12
    RegQueryValueEx(VendorInstallDll) failed
    VendorWantsMSTCP=1, WantsMSIPX=2, WantsSetupUI=1
    WantsMSDNS=1, WantsMSSAP=0
    New wsock32.dll file version: 0004000a.00000678
    ERROR: unsupported Windows9X version (4,10), canceling setup
    WS2SETUP end: failure

    WS2SETUP begin: 10/21/2004 03:19:28
    RegQueryValueEx(VendorInstallDll) failed
    VendorWantsMSTCP=1, WantsMSIPX=2, WantsSetupUI=1
    WantsMSDNS=1, WantsMSSAP=0
    New wsock32.dll file version: 0004000a.00000678
    ERROR: unsupported Windows9X version (4,10), canceling setup
    WS2SETUP end: failure

    Obviously I don't understand computer-ese well enough to translate this message. Can someone tell me what I have to do to run Mechwarrior?

    Thanks,
    Orangeman

    Is this the same version game punkinhead?
    Winsock 2 is for 2k and XP. So, are you upgrading? If you are upgrading, then you should give XP a try.

    Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall? btw, winsock 2 actually should have already been installed...my mistake.
    I have to ask though, the only change was your internet connection type? Are you sure? Then, it must be the game itself.

    Actually if you want the full story this is what happened:

    Originally when I got broadband I was able to open - but not play Mechwarrior. I was also having difficulty keeping the broadband connection connected after 30 minutes. It would inexplicably go offline.

    This problem became more acute after I installed a video camera that came with the broadband. It would stay online for about a minute then cancel.

    I went on to the Logitech website (the camera's manufacturer) and discovered that if I went into Control Panel>Network and removed everything and restarted and allowed the computer to reinstall everything, the problem with the camera would be solved.

    Well, I never reinstalled the camera but my problem with being kicked offline after a few minutes was solved.

    But I still can't play Mechwarrior. Winsock.dll and Winsock2 appear to be installed in my computer. However the Winsock2 I have appears to be part of PestPatrol.

    Hope this helps,
