PC not powering up

When I press the power on button, the CPU and the power supply fan spins momentarily for 3 seconds and goes quiet. The LED on the motherboard is lit. Funny thing is the night before I was just fixing and changing the HDs and it all was working fine. When i put the back the cover the the next day, this strange phenomea occured.
Anybody can help with some pointers? Thanks in advance.

Make sure you disconnect the power cord before trying anything! Pull and reseat the RAM and CPU. Pull all cards except video and try to power on. If this fails and you have access to another power supply, try that. These symptoms most often indicate a component shorting out or improperly seated, a dead power supply, a dead motherboard, or a dead CPU usually in that order. Good luck.

try pluggin in the cpu fan into anohter fan port for power

Make sure you didn't reverse the ide cable, it should be red wire on pin 1 side on MB and red wire toward power plug on drive. Most systems will not pwr on if the cable is wrong. Some cables are not keyed so this is possible.

got the PC to power up finally...pulled out all the PCI boards and found that the power connection to the floppy was a little bit funny...adjusted it and everything was working fine after that. Thanks for all for the tips. This is a great site for newbies like me!
