End of support for AVG 6

Sadly, Grisoft have announced support for Version 6 of AVG (the free AVG is V6) will cease at the end of this year:

    http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

"Grisoft announces the end of support for AVG version 6.0 effective on December 31, 2004 for technical reasons. This version has been available since 1999. Its structure does not allow for further improvements planned for version 7 nor improvements in detection techniques expected to come in the future.

End of support means we will no longer provide program updates or Virus Database updates for version 6.0 and therefore, within days, this version will not protect against new virus outbreaks!

Current AVG 6.0 users should upgrade to AVG 7.0. Information on upgrading to version 7.0 can be found at http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_upgrade.php.

How not to endear yourself to users and almost certainly guaranteeing that no one is going to upgrade to the (pay) v.7.

    Sigh.

I guess its over to Avast! or....?

Incidentally, if you feel a write-in campaign might help, here's the site for their addresses -

A shirty note from me is on the way....

But note the allusion to a new Beta program that may be the replacement to AVG 6 Free.

    Or not....

If the article you posted is true then they will continue to offer a free edition based on newer code. They should have the new free edition out at the end of November according to the link. When they say "within days" I assume they mean within days of December 31, 2004.

I gather the Version 7 Free is expected to be released prior to the expiry date of the Beta (Nov 30th). So hopefully we won't have to do without AVG Free unless we don't like Version 7.

A 'little bird' told me ages ago AVG 6 would cease, when they released the pay version of AVG 8 to replace 7 , apparently the changes made in sp2 mean there won't be an 8 for a while yet, those intended chanes going into AVG SOHO version ( a paid product) & avg version 7.0.280..

One thing I will add, when the hell are they going to sort this 'registration' nightmare they have to get serial numbers ? .. 3 times this week I've tried to register users & get them their own code, & three times I've 'got sick of trying' & used a 'stock' one .. grrr ... hey ho such is life

I've been doing that for ages, since they kept sending the same 2 codes anyway.

Maybe they haven't bothered to fix the registration since version 6 codes could soon be redundant. (Assuming V7 will have new codes...)

    Granted.

Anti-Vir (and to a lesser degree, Avast!) are on standby here if AVG doesn't pan out.

Anti-Vir seems to do well enough by all reports. And, like the best of the freebies out there, seems to maintain current ref files without the need (like the retail versions) of renewing a 'subscription' every year.
