Sound is missing!
Hi. I'm running Win XP Professional x64, Version 2003, Service Pack 2 on a HP Compaq dc7100 Intel Pentium R 4 CPU. 3.00 GHZ computer. This is not the original operating system, as you can well gather. It as running Windows 2000 until it crashed two weeks ago, and I installed the operating system listed above. The computer has ran shaky since but the big thing is the sound. It's GONE! And I've ran ALL kinds of virus programs to remove anything that might still be around but nothing shows up so all I can gather is whatever was on here, destroyed the sound. the Windows services shows the sound as started, the BIOS was checked and says its active, no sound device shows in the areas where a sound device should show.
I need help pls...and I need it as quickly as possible. I tried to download Everest Home Edition but it's a zip file. So much is gone now...hopefully, this software has an .exe file to download and install.
thanks for any help you can provide with this issue.

Welcome to Windrivers myslyn. (2) things you can do, one would be to install Service Pack 3 fo XP, as there may be drivers in this update, Second have you looked in the device manager to see if there is an item in a yello exclamtion point. If so you can right click on the item and then left click on properties, click the tab Details, then make sure the Hardware Ids is showing. In the window below you can take that series of letters and numbers and Google search to find a driver for the sound card.
It's not the computers that keep having problems, it's the users!!

Hi Zonie! I can install this service pack to see if it will make any difference but there is a yellow exclamation mark listed under Multimedia Audio controller. The problem is that the actual controller is not listed under Hardware. I have looked there but it gives me the message "this device is unknown". So the computer doesn't know what multimedia audio controller I once used.
Just as an aside, I installed Service Pack 2 after the crash. :-(

If you read the bottom part of my post, it shows you how to find the Hardware ID which will allow you to find a driver for it.

Hi Zonie! Sorry about that...I was in a rush this morning. I found the ID and did what you told me but it's not that cut and dried. This device has several matches for this ID: pci ven_8086&DEV_266E&SUBSYS_3006103C&REV_03\ and I can't find one that doesn't cost in case it doesn't work. I know that I tried to download a driver from a site called Driver Identifier.com but it didn't work because...well, I don't know why! I'm concerned because when it is time to install a driver, my hardware wizard always goes looking for the software on CD! :-(
So back to you... again.

Lot of fumbling around going on here.
This is the driver for that system with windows xp professional.
Now that being said it says absolutely nothing about 64 bit.
So because you choose to install a system thats not listed it may or may not work.
Only way to tell is try it
Also you should always have all of the windows updates done

I appreciate that because you're right. I did feel there's been a lot of fumbling going on my end since I don't know anything about the sound drivers.
I'll attempt to download it and go from there...thanks again!

Once I got the driver I needed, my sound issues were gone that day. But I thought I'd come back to thank you since you were a butt about it.
take care!

And this is why those of us that remain, are wary to help. Hopefully, a mod bans your ip address from further posts.
