Computer locks up when DVD is inserted

Sony Vaio computer running XP SP2.
All Sony updates and firmware installed.

After inserting a DVD of any type, the files are read and the computer freezes. Locked up tight.

In Safe Mode, the files on the DVD are read and individual files on the DVD can be opened.

Sony techs are running me in circles on this.
    Uninstalled SP2.
    Reinstalled SP2
    Uninstalled DVD drive.
    Reinstalled DVD drive.
    Nothing works.

    Plays and records CDs fine.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

Welcome to windrivers mp3aa. Sounds like a corrupt file somewhere. Try running "sfc /scannow" from start\run.
Probability factor of one to one...we have normality, I repeat we have normality. Anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem.

    Thanks for the input!
I tried running that. A box comes up and scans for a while.
    No errors reported.
DVD still locks up the computer.

I put a disk of just files on DVD in.
Autoplay scans it, then a dialogue box pops up and asks what I want to do.
I click on "open files in Windows Explorer", then the box disappears and total freeze.

I put a movie disk in, the dialogue box opens and I click on "Open with Power DVD". Power DVD opens then total freeze.
    This is very strange.

    Any other suggestions?

I switched off "Autorun" and had PowereDVD come up when the DVD was inserted.
    PowerDVD started playing the DVD!
It ran for about 3 seconds then the computer froze.

Sounds like you may have a drive issue,
If you have the resources you can try it in another PC/

I thought it was a drive issue until it worked in Safe Mode.

Pulled it out Sunday and put it in my wife's computer.

I was able to read the disk and open files.
Couldn't play a movie DVD due to lack of DVD decoder.
    Computer didn't lock up!

    This is exasperating!

I removed several programs that have DVD capabilities such as "Click to DVD" and "PowerDVD" and reinstalled them.
    Nothing works.

    What's that?

Downloaded Sony's DVD Drive Check utility and ran it.

    It detects the drive.
I inserted blank media and it ran a write test for 15:00.

    Then it froze up.

Just when it was going to start reading (?).
    Maybe?

What would try to load first when a disk is to be read?
Possibly a corrupted dll file or maybe the DVD decoder??

    HELP!

    Reloaded from scratch.
Took the better part of 7 hours, but everything works again.
