Problem with DVD not showing up as a drive

I am on WinXP home on a PC with a P4 2.54ghz processor, 1gb of ram, and 420gb total disc space.

I have a Sony dru530a DVD-R drive and it use to work almost fine. Now, the drive is not showing up in My Computer. Instead, I get a drive listed in "Other" section with an icon of a disk drive and a red questino mark. When I click it, it says "L:\referes to a location that is unavailable..... " The Sony drive shows up in the device manager, but ther is a yellow exclamation mark over it and it has a funny name Sony ( (D^D(R_LR]-=38a(. When I go to properties, I get in devise status "This device cannot start. (Code 10)."

What could problem be and how could I correct it?

Have you tried removing the device from Device Manager and re-installing?

Try it in a different computer. If it works, then it something in the computer and not the drive; if it doesn't work, then it's the drive itself...

Yeah I know its not the drive. It's something in windows settings or something with the drivers. I am trying to figure out how to fix...

Tried that... firmware is up to date.
When I called sony and read to them the Code 10 device did not start error, they said its a problem with windows and the driver. Anyone know how this can be fixed?

Try to have a look at my thread called "DV capture with two Hard Disks"
    at http://forums.windrivers.com/showthread.php?t=65210

I have experienced something similar, and found a workaround that works for me.
    I don't have a final solution though.

oh it could be a bad IDE cable, or a failing power cable.

Could it be a bad idea cable if I have another CD drive on the same cable that works fine?

I tried switching ide cable and it still doesnt work. The drive works in another computer I put it into. When I contacted sony, they stated (after giving me some instructions) that I have the latest firmware and that since I get a code 10 error in device manager, that it is a windows problem (thus they cannot help me). Problem is I cannot figure out how to fix this problem because when I uninstall xp driver in device manager and reinstall it, It comes up with same problem.
