XPHome machine having Internet trouble

I'm having trouble with a compaq at the moment. We just did a system restore and the machine worked fine with a test internet connection. When the customer got it back they had trouble and talked to the ISP. After 2 hours she finally got it working.... it worked for awhile but she is now getting an error : "NT authorization/system error" when trying to connect. She is also already been reinfected with several "moderate bugs" according to Norton....

the other problem is the computer is not here in front of me at the moment

Did you do all the windows critical updates after the restore? Last estimate I saw was a machine could last maybe 15 minutes on the net before being infected with the garbage out there unless the critical updates were installed.
