Blocking Yahoo messenger port
How do I go about this? Google comes back with numerous solutions on a network, but I want to do it on my home machine.

Blocking port 5050 with your firewall and cs1.yahoo.com, cs2.yahoo.com, cs3.yahoo.com in your hosts file seems to offer one probable solution:
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mesg/use/use-17.html
EDIT some sites seen to quote port 5100 for Yahoo messenger

Tech-To-Tech Mod
just use gpedit to disable running it completely. I did this on a problem machine at work. it's under user config / administrative tools / system "don't run specified windows applications" just add ypager.exe and also whatever the install file name is. then set rights on the ypager file so that it can't be renamed. so it can't be installed and the exe can't be run.

You can also do this by adding some entries to your hosts file. We do that to our lab machines here so that clients cannot use messengers, but staff can. Here is an example of our hosts file:
127.0.0.1 localhost
# Block AOL IM
127.0.0.1 login.oscar.aol.com
127.0.0.1 aim.com
127.0.0.1 www.aim.com
# Block MSN Messenger
