    Building new system....won't boot

Ok, I've been out of the majors for a while and I'm a little rusty.

    First the specs:

    Pentium 4 3.0Ghz LGA775 socket
    Asus P5GD1 Northbridge i914P Southbridge ICH6R 800Mhz FSB
    Nvidia GeForce 6600 256MB PCI express 16x
    1GB PNY PC3200 D512MPC32OPT RAM
    80GB Maxtor IDE HDD
    250GB Maxtor SATA HDD
    Lite-on 8x DVDRW
ATI TV Wonder VE video capture
Sony 200ES monitor (used for install)
    PS2 keyboard and mouse
    Antec 420W PSU case

PSU powers up, all fans spin up ok and mobo LED lights up, but display is black. No POST, beeps, nothing. I have pulled everything except video card and ram and powered up but no change. I have pulled and reseated the CPU and HSF. I have tried several monitors. Also tried the digital output on the GeForce. Also rechecked all jumpers and connections. Also pulled the battery and reset the CMOS settings. Nothing.

    Thoughts or suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.
    L

Try it with only one stick of ram at a time.

Make sure cpu fan is plugged into the cpu pins on the mainboard, and not the system fan.

Make sure the voltage selector on back of psu is set to 115.

Yep tried it with one RAM stick and 0 RAM sticks. Same result.

    Voltage is set to 115.

Check reset bios jumper, make sure it's set correctly. Reset bios.

Try another vid card. Pull mobo out of case and try to start on bench.

Just checking, but did you connect both power plugs to the mobo?

With everything you've done (disconnected drives, too, right?), it's got to be a bad mb.
Bring it back and exchange it, or, since it sounds like you're now an "end user", take it back and make them test it for an RMA.
You, as an end user, should not have to work that hard on something that should work right off the bat.

according to ASUS' website, that board may not boot with BIOS earlier than 1004 with that CPU. try it with another slower P4 if you can.

Bingo!!! That was it. Forgot the little 4-pin power connector. Plugged it in and it booted right up.

Once again you have lived up to your screenname.

    Thanks!!

It's slowly all starting to come back. I've lost my edge working in my cushy corporate job these last 5 years.

Aye. It's like riding a bike. If you've got the gift, it will come back quick.
