Garbled Sound on Dell Inspiron 510M

I recently worked on a Dell Inspiron 510M notebook, which came with Windows XP Home. I upgraded it to XP Pro, SP2, after which, the sound came garbled.

I already downloaded & installed the latest audio driver from Dell, to no avail.

I also had a problem with the USB driver initially, but was able to fix it after installing the USB 2.0 driver from Dell.

Funny thing is, I'm not getting any errors from the Device Manager.

    Thanks for your help.
    I don't know, and I don't care.

simular problems with audio on my dell dim 3000

my audio was distorted even on startup
after 2 hours on the phone w dell
2 weeks of searching i found this
    sounds crazy, but worked immediately!

There is a popular problem with the audio for Dell's.
I'm not sure HOW this problem came to be but a possible solution is found.
Well, atleast this worked for me and I have been searching for this kind of solution for about 2 weeks now.

Problem: Audio stuttering, distortion, lagginess, etc. etc.

    Solution: (Using Windows XP)
    - Right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager
    - Extend the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers group
    - Right click on Primary IDE and hit Uninstall
    - Reboot the computer, the Primary IDE drivers will re-install themselves after you reboot.
    - Go back to the Device Manager and extend the same group again.
    - Right click on Primary IDE Channel and go to Properties > Advanced Settings tab.
    - Make sure that both Device's Modes are on "DMA if available".
    - Anyways, by this time, my sound was working flawlessly.

Bainmeister's fix steps worked for me, incredible! I was trying to use my laptop to do some DJ'ing/sound mixes, and it was stuttering when using the DJ software and when playing songs in iTunes (although not when playing songs in Windows Media Player for some reason)... I just followed those steps of deleting the Primary IDE and EVERYTHING'S playing perfectly.

I spent HOURS trying to troubleshoot it, and you taking the time to post that fix solved my problem single-handedly, I appreciate it! :-)

    Talking Garbled Sound on Dell

Bainmeister is my hero. I spent over 10 hours on the phone, or on site with Dell for my daughters Dell 1505 with garble sound.

His wacky 2004 fix, worked and all is well.

Thank you thank you thank you.

    Welcome to Windrivers BKblake

You might want to download the chipset drivers from Dell and install those as well... or did Dell support have you do that?

you could also test the sound card in the diagnostics that Dell provides. You just need to boot to the Resource CD to access them.

Chipset drivers drive the base hardware on the motherboard. They control the ide drives. A later version should "switch on" DMA or drive DMA better.
