I can't help but wonder if he was serious about the official-looking good-bye though.

I also noticed some posts had been deleted from it over the last few days without any explanations???

nope not deleted, just unstuck and closed.
It was his leaving card, as it where, and a few people had put comments in there that didn't belong in a leaving card. Just being a thoughtful, tidy NooNoo.
