    Reboot Problem when Printing

    The Patient:

    Intel P4 2.4, SuperMicro Mainboard, 512 Mb DDR, 40GB Hd WinXP Home, HP USB Color Printer

    The Problem:

    When Printing Images with the (usually,but not only 8x10 hi res) The Pc will reboot without error msg or Warning. This problem ocucrrs reguardless of the software used to print, and the type of image that is being printed.

    Tried so far:

    Trend Micro Virus Scan
    Mcafee Virus Scan
    Removed all unnecessary items from startup.
    Spybot, AdAware, and Hijack this.
    New Power supply
    Uninstalled and reinstalled USB ports, (Windows XP Drivers)
    Re installed Printer software and drivers.


    Other notes:
    The Problem occurred randomly over a period of 3 months, and now occurrs at every print.

    The Pc is about 1 yr old, in a clean environment,

    All fans appear to be functional.

    Problem only occurrs during printing.

    Printer does not have a parallel port.

    Just a wild guess, but what brand and wattage power supply do you have?

    Also, tried a different USB port?

    Turn off the auto-reboot on error feature. Right-click My Computer, select Properties, then the Advanced tab, then finally the Settings button under "Startup and Recovery". If an error is being generated prior to the reboot this will allow you to read it.

    update your printer drivers

    download the latest greatest from the manufacturer's site.

    Just an addon to the last post... Go into add-Remove programs and remove all printer related programs that have been installed before doing the update online.


    ...If the re-installation of your drivers is not working I might point you towards uninstalling & re-installing the USB drivers based on the motherboard, not the internal XP drivers.


    have you tried replacing the USB cable?
