    Angry AVG 7.0 Uninstall Nightmare

Can not seem to uninstall AVG 7.0 (free version) completely. I have reinstalled it, then tried to uninstall it a few times but the services are still showing up in services.msc. Moreover when I tried to install my Norton coproate 9.0 client I get a hard reboot. The AVG uninstall did not even remove the grisoft program directory, so the services were actually starting until I manually deleted the program directory. I know I should not complain much about free software, but I only wanted to test it. I did not think it would rape my machine. Help!!! has anyone experienced this??? I should add that I am running XP Pro wSP2 and all patches on a AMD64 3200+. Thanks ahead of time.

Have you tried an uninstall in safe mode?

Sounds like you got AOLed. You might try this:

    1. Reinstall program

    2. Use msconfig
Go to run --> type msconfig

    3. Stop all AVG services and remove AVG listing from boot.ini; essentially remove any trace of the program at start up

    3. Uninstall program using add/remove programs

    4. If you are experienced enough you can also edit the registry to clean it up.

    5. Then install Norton

I hope it works for you. Good luck.

If you have the feature operating the easiest might be to go to a restore point before you installed the AVG. If you are trying things in XP that is a great safety valve. Make a restore point before then simply restore to that point if you don't like what you tried.

    start - settings - control panel - add/remove programs - uninstall AVG

remove its programs folder if it's still there, baleet it from the registry... should there be any more problems?

    Hi Gerf

I think the "more problems" for newbies like me are those that involve messing around with the registry. Can I just delete the four "grisoft" folders or is it more complicated than that?

    Thumbs up

It sounds as if you may have got an interaction between Norton and AVG.
I have installed and uninstaled many AVG without mishap but have yet to get Noorton off without grief. I agree if you can go back to a set point before the AVG install that is by far the best and safest way to go.

Thanks Robert, but I don't have any AV on my PC except AVG. I was trying to uninstall/reinstall it because of updating problems. I did as Gerf suggested (Add/Remove programs then manually remove all folders) but when I try to reinstall I just get the message that a full version is already on my computer and it won't complete the operation.

The only thing I haven't done that Gerf suggested is remove the references to Grisoft in the Registry - this is mainly because of all the dire warnings about messing about with the Registry if you don't know what you're doing (I don't)! There are four folders there labelled Grisoft and I just want to know if it's safe to delete them.

My system restore would be right back to the end of December as AVG worked perfectly for four weeks or so.

    Anyway, thanks again for trying
    Mike

Mike, I also have some fear in the registry but if you take it by the numbers I think it could be done safely. I recommend you send this group the instances of grisoft in the registry and ask that a senior member walk through step by step removing them. That is how I would do it.

Uninstalling doesn't mess up the registry.

I like the program Killbox to shut down programs that Task Manager won't let you. Google for it, it's free and a small download.

Thank you both for your interest and help.

In fact, searching the problem in Google eventually led me to grisoft's own forum where it seems to be a common problem. They recommend going to HKEY_Local_Machine - Windows> Software> Microsoft> Windows> Current Version > Uninstall and deleting the AVG7UNINSTALL folder. This then allows the instal program to load properly i.e. giving you the option for a full uninstall.

    Many thanks again
    Mike
