no sound hp751n
formatted and installed windows xp - now no sound, How do you determine what sound card drivers you need?

Normally I would look in the device manager before reformatting, but since we can't do that you can open the case and see what actually is on the sound card(unless it's onboard sound) or you could go to HP's website and see if they list their computer's spec's by model number. Let us know how you make out.

I definately am no a pc wizard, so I appreciate all the help I can get here. I ran an application that I found on this site called "everest" it tells me:

Your m/b is Asus P4S-LA. Audio is ADI1885 AC'97. As ususual, HP doesn't have the driver posted. Analog Devices (ADI) does not post reference drivers. Asus does not post drivers for OEM boards. Give this one a try: http://download.sis.com/download_ste...&os=4&x=26&y=8
Edit: Your newer posts confirms it - this is your driver.

I am d/l it as we speak. I do not have dsl so it will take approx 20 minutes. By chance you are still here in the fourm, do I need to delete any files, or just unzip and install. Thanks for all your advice, I am very glad I found this website.

Just wanted to give a big THANK YOU for the information. I now have my sound back. The everest program was a big help in confirming my pc info. Thank you for the link to d/l my driver.
