PC loses net after 5 mins.
A friends pc will only connect to the net for about 5 mins and then will lose the connection.
They had all sorts of spyware and crap on it so I ran the following.
Adaware
Spybot
A2
trend micros online virus scanner
Hijack this
Cw Shredder
I removed everything they found which included a couple of trojans.
They also had new.net so I downloaded the uninstaller and removed it. I deleted the reg keys that pointed to it and also found a few others that were suss such as C:\windows\susp.exe so removed them too and then deleted the files within the widnows folder (I think there was three all up)
Also removed the reference to them in the start up group.
The PC will connect to the net in IE or firefox but 5 mins later will lose the connection. e-mail and pinging work fine all the time and a laptop connected via a lan to this pc also has full internet connection all the time but the pc doesnt. If I reboot the connection is back again but then drops out 5 mins later or so.
I checked the hosts file but this seems okay too. I had a pc the other day that had lost full net access due to new.net but have never seen one that loses it after 5 mins or so. Besides I cant see any traces of new.net and am confident it has been removed.
I ran a2 last of all and it found nothing.
Any suggestions on this?

Hi Riddell,
Is their e-mail set to disconnect after checking? OE will still check for mail periodically even if not open!!
Got caught by this one once......
John

No sorry I should have said that they are on adsl always on. Also the laptop still connects to the net all the time and it is connected to the same adsl router.
It is definetly something related to IE and firefox only. I am still able to ping sites even though I cant connect to them in IE or FF.

Just for giggles, check to make sure that power management has been turned off for the network card.

Why would that be the problem?

Okay I ran AVG which found trojan farmmext.exe in the win/temp/cab folder. So removed it, I had already removed it from C:\windows previously.
I have run the lspfix and then phoned the isp's tech support. They told me to reboot the modem and re do all the settings but still no luck with the internet connection. Any other ideas as to what could be causing this??

Get me a soldering iron and some duct tape, and I'll see what I can do.
