Go Alicia!
Just watched one of my favourite local tennis players, Alicia Molik, defeat Venus Williams at the Australian Open Tennis:

A big step up now, taking on Lindsay Davenport.
Lindsay took the first set 6-4, they're 1-all in the second at the moment.

Well, Alicia's doing it tough, but just broke back to level the deciding set 5-all.
Update: Alicia leading 7-6

Nope, she couldn't do it! Lindsay took it 6-4 4-6 9-7
What a great match though... pushing the world's No 1 to three sets & 9-7, really proud of our Alicia!

Cheers Platypus.
This reminds me of us "footy" nuts giving the play by play during the Euro tourney. Beating Venus was a biggie, too. Good for her. Besides, she's quite pretty:

And Lleyton Hewitt has just beaten David Nalbandian, but I'm not so enthusiastic about him.

Well, that's not a good pic of her. Ya could have done better. So, Australia Day: is that like Independence Day here? Tell me so I don't have to google.

It's only supposed to be a picture of her smile!
Actually a lot of pics of her that come up on searches show the usual tennis player's grimaces etc.
Australia day marks the day of the arrival of the "First Fleet" european settlers in Sydney Cove, 1788.
There's the usual bunch of national celebrations, fireworks, speeches, awards, citizenship ceremonies. And barbecues...

I don't know about Maria, but if at first you don't succeed:

Lindsay's partner there Corina Morariu's recovery from leukaemia is pretty amazing too.
