Question screen extends for ~4 in to the right of the screen

i have no idea what the problem is. when i scroll the mouse towards the right (and only the right side does this) side of the screen, it disappears for about an extra 4 inches... this led to my aim window that i dock on the right 'disappearing', really it was just off to the side i guess. i know how to move the display around on the screen, and it visually ends where its supposed to, but yet i can still scroll and place windows in this 'void' space. i just noticed that the sims2 will no longer start...i've tried messing with different screen resolutions/display modes, but have no idea what to do to get my 'extra screen' back. random stuff from dxdiag that may or may not help:
    Windows XP
    Compaq Presario S4100NX
    BIOS Version 3.19
    758MB RAM

    (and i just noticed now that i have a display 1 & 2 tabs...)
    display 1

    NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000
    128.0 MB
    display mode: 1024 x 768 (32 bit)

    display 2

    intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV graphics controller
    64.0 MB

when i installed the new vid card (display 1) i removed the old card that was in the slot, im assumeing it still shows up there just to bother me...

any idea how to get rid of the extra 4 inches of screen that i cant see?
