    more info?

On my Slackware 10 system runlevel 5 is unsed by configured the same as runlevel 3, which is no gui/multiuser (the default).

So what distro/version are you running and is the problem with your X/Gnome/KDE coming up? Can you get to a SSH login prompt?

If it is a display issue have you made any changes (desktop size, new video card, new monitor, etc)

You can find what is going on at each runlevel by looking in the file etc/inittab

Give us some more info and I am sure myself or one of the regulars who are much more knowledgable than me will respond.

Sorry for the lack of info !
Suse 9.1 and the actual error is with the KDE..KTE GLOBALS NOT WRITTABLE
    & /tmp/.......#'s.../.dcopserver_linux_0
    "Ck if program is running"
I'm not even sure how to do that. I've seen where some have just changes Log on names but I would like to know how to fix this Vs get around it.

OK..I'll add a few more lines!
    will not save configuration:
    "/tmp/1291385412/.kde/share/config/kdmgreetrc" and
    /kdeglobals"

    Any help ?

    hmmm...

I am by no means an expert - so this might be out of my league, but a few things to check.

Log into the terminal and type "top" or ps -A to see what programs are running.

dcopserver is needed for kde to run (not really helpful but linkage here: http://www.kde.org/areas/sysadmin/startup.php)

How is disk space? just wondering since it is saying "GLOBALS NOT WRITTABLE", if you have multiple disks specifically whicjever disk has /home and /tmp

Can you execute 'Xinit' or startX from the terminal?

Sorry for the delay in getting back -

Xinit or startX should fire up the GUI, so if that works we at least know X itself isn't the problem. The question is where to go from here, to be honest I am not sure. I would say to look at what happens at statup but as you said it has worked great for 8 months.

Well, you could restart the system and then look through the logs and see if there are any other hints in there. They will be in /var/log
