COMPARISON: Browser speed
- There is a speed war on the web. Browsers compete on many fronts; security, standards support, features and speed. Most people are aware of which major browser fails on three of these, but one of them is still open for grabs

Apply these tweaks to firefox and watch it fly. Opera is no comparison.
Firefox Tweaks
Here are a few basic tweaks for Firefox which should speed up the browser on your machine. Remember, this is just the tip of the iceberg, and more will come shortly. For the moment, these are the best-known and most useful tweaks you should implement. However before changing any of these settings, back up your profile as detailed here.
To access the advanced settings in Firefox type "about:config" (without quotes) in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. Then adjust the following settings by double-clicking on each one and entering the new value:
network.http.max-connections: 48
network.http.max-connections-per-server: 16
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy: 16
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server: 8
network.http.pipelining: true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests: 20
network.http.proxy.pipelining: true
nglayout.initialpaint.delay: 0
privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins: 1
Note: you will have to create the nglayout.initialpaint.delay and privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins entries by right-clicking on the config screen, selecting New>Integer and entering the name shown above then assigning a value.
The above are my personal settings, and should suit all broadband users. The full Firefox Tweak Guide will contain more detailed descriptions of all Firefox tweaks and what they actually do.
