    Flashing Bios

Trying to flash the bios in a Tyan Tiger MXP S2466n-m4. I am running the PHLASH16.exe which I downloaded from Tyan site along witht the new Bios. I get a error that pops up saying: PHEONIX BIOS ERROR Cannot Flash If Memory Managers (e.g. HIMEM) present. PRESS ANY KEY TO EXIT.

I am booting with a clean boot disk I made in Win XP, and I also tried a couple of boot disks I had from Win98 / 95 installs. I do not see any memory resident programs loading with these disks.\

    What could this be?

Did you try hitting the F5 key as the 98 startup floppy loaded? That disables everthing except command.com, io.sys and msdos.sys. Left to itself, it loads CD drive support and other stuff. Windows ME startup floppies load himem.sys whatever you do as I found out trying to run Goldmem memory tester after booting from a Windows ME floppy. Dunno what the XP floppy loads though, but it might be similar to the ME one.
I think I know just enough to know how much I don't know... I think...

I tried the F5 part and still the same. I will confirm that I am using a true win98 or 95 floppy.

    Thanks

    grab a windows 95/98 system

from the dos prompt, format a: /s /u

    copy your files

boot to the disk, you should be fine, looks like something is still interfering, make a boot disk that will not even have the otion of loading mem stuff

By default, bootable disks made by using Win9X, are having included Himem.sys driver in Config.sys and a lot of unneeded drivers... That's why you're having problems with flash utility. Follow Matridom's instructions, and everything should be fine...

You can try also www.bootdisk.com - they have disk images for BIOS flashing...

    Hey Rus, what's up.
Your point on 9x boot disks is certainly correct, but not so with the XP created boot disk. That is the most basic boot disk there is, with just the system on it. CardMan says he tried that. CardMan: was it a system disk created from within Xp?
