Print Driver won't install
Hi All,
Have a HP e-Vectra in with Win98. Trying to install USB printer. Install fails at print driver install. Have tried two different USB printers (Epson & HP) and a network attached printer (Brothers), the software for each of these fails at the print driver load. Can anyone give me a boost?
Thank-you in advance

Geezer
Since this is 98 (or is it actually 98SE ?), which has 'much less good' support for USB than say xp, I'd start by testing your usb ports, as two different printers not installing makes me think of that or the cables you are using (but if you used different cables, then definately the port itself, or more correctly the drivers for it).
Do you have any other types of USB devices 'laid about' so that you can verify whether the software for the USB port is installed correctly ?

Thought of that.
As posted, thought I would try a network printer, and same problem. Must be something else.

Geezer
So since you just shot down the only theory I could muster .. any more clues ?
(sorry, I misread it apparently & I assumed both printers were via usb locally)
What about any error messages - you must get something ..?

Both of the USB printers software would load OK. Printer setup would load and request re-boot upon end of suite install. Upon re-boot, no printers would show in the printer folder, and no programs would see a printer installed.

Update
Ok,
I have a Brother MFC-5440CN that has both Network and USB conectivity. The Network software install gets all the way to the print driver install and up pops the following error:
Brothers MFL-Pro Suite
An error occured during the installation
Please restart your PC, ensure all active applications are closed - Then reinstall "MFL-Pro Suite"
(ISO35-InstallNetworkPrintDriver-1)
I can get the USB print driver installed, but when I try to print to it I get the following:
Printers Folder
There was an error writing to BRUSB for printer (Brother MFC-5440CN USB Printer)
The system cannot write to the specified device

More to add
Well, I decided to throw a new HD in and load a fresh copy of Win98SE. Updated the drivers and installed the printer (via USB). Everything worked like a charm. So that rules out the hardware issue. I did a file transfer for the customer, so they are happy. Still, it obviously boils down to a sofware issue?!?

uninstall the printer driver, disconnect the printer, reboot windows in safe mode and go to device manager, delete any usb device that has ? mark or any unkown devices.
Reboot system without having the printer plugged in. shut down the computer, plug in the printer make sure cartridges are installed, and start the pc, it will find new printer, put in the printer driver cd, once prompted go to win98 or 98se whichever is your os, select the driver from cd and install.
This should do it.
