problems with display

I had a problem with my display flickering on my laptop(dell inspirion 1000).
I went in and started changed the refresh rate. I went from 60 to 56.

Anyway, the monitor is totally scrambled and totally unviewable.

I was just wondering if there is a way to boot to command line and change the monitor refresh rate manually. Oh, I'm running Mandrake 10.1.

I don't want to have to reload it because I had so much trouble getting my wireless to work.

Any suggestions on how to change the refresh rate......

hi can you boot your laptop into any sort of safe mode, as you can in windows ?

In version 9, when it's booting up, press "I" to get interactive boot up process. Then you can reset the display.

I finally got it. There was a file that has the settings in it. I was able to locate the file. I noticed the file had an old version with the file extension of old. I just renamed the file with the old extension which had my previous setting. Then everything was back to normal.

I can't for the life of me remember the file name.

I could boot into "command line" but i had a hard time finding a command line editor.
There was emacs but it was a real pain to use. I think there was one called vi.

Anyway a simple renaming of the file solved the problem and I'm a happy camper now...
