    Unhappy Win 2000 Administrator Password

I have been charged with maintaining a Compaq Deskpro EN running Windows 2000 SP2 Professional without being
furnished with the Administrator password. I've been
trying to get it from the powers that be. I still don't
    have it.

I downloaded Petter Nordahl's Bootdisk, copied it to a
boot floppy (which it made) and booted the PC with it.
I followed the directions and completed the last step
"WRITING OUT THE CHANGES." I got this error message:

sh: can't access the tty; job control turned off.

    The change never was written.

I checked Nordahl's FAQ file. Sure enough there was a
directly applicable entry. One of the items was "Should
work on console 2-4 (alt-F2 and so on)." I tried console 2, 3 and 4. It didn't help. Nordahl stated that users should never report this error again!

It sure looks like the end of my quest, but I have to
ask the question: Is there any to turn job control on?

If I can't get control of Windows 2000 on this PC I am
going to revert to Windows 98 or ME.

Without giving advice that is crossing into gray areas as far as security is concerned, you do realize that if you are considering reverting to 98 or **shudder** ME, you're going to end up wiping and reloading the OS, so why not just reload it with 2000 again? Besides the fact its more secure and stable, this time you can pick the local admin p/w yourself.

Can't you just tell the powers that be that there is not a THING you can do without the admin username and password?

Have you tried using adminstrator with a blank password?
When you’re left out of the club, you know it, when you’re in the club, you don’t see what the problem is.

Get me a soldering iron and some duct tape, and I'll see what I can do.
