Can I copy files AND their permissions?

I need to copy a bunch of files with a lot of very specific permissions to a new file server (from a 2000 server to a 2003 server). I know the regular copy command doesn't bring over permissions. I have the "ROBOCOPY" tool installed, but it looks way more complicated than I need something to be. Is there a better way?

    Thanks!

Hmm, I found the "permcopy" command but doesn't look like there's much info on it.

Yep, I figured out the /O switch for Xcopy. Works pretty well. Robocopy is way too confusing. Thanks for the hizz-elp.

i know also that if you move files from one location on the server to another it will carry over it's permissions.

not if you download copyrite XP which front ends robocopy with a gui. very nice. I was going to link to their hompage, but for some reason, can't find it now. anyway it's freeware and I have a copy in case anyone wants to try it I can host it.

    Post Robocopy GUI

If you are looking for a great GUI interface that front-ends Robocopy, allows you to quickly create robocopy scripts, map network drives, view logs, and is a third the size of Copy Rite. Take a look at this....

not bad.......maybe not for someone that doesn't understand robocopy and all it's switches....but pretty decent.

I think I still prefer copyrite for ease of use though.

I found a very easy to use program (it isn't free but has a trial period so you can use it for a bit anyways) called secure copy from ***********.

I have recently transfered almost a quarter million files with permissions from one server to a new one. Worked like a champ.

Thumbs up Robocopy GUI v3.0.1 Released

Sleek new GUI wrapper. The utility now allows the user to set standard flags, save these settings, save the script without running it, map network drives, browse for source folder, browse for target folder, browse for log file, load settings, the process is threaded. No more annoying cmd windows either.

I had the same problem and FINALLY I get the solution. I tried Scopy, PermCopy, RoboCopy, Xcopy, and NOTHING WORKS!!!!!
The solution ia quite very simple:
    1. To copy files with their exact NTFS permission use the Backup program inside Windows 2003 Server in Accessories>System Tools
    2. Share the location on the target server where you want the files
    3. On the source server, create a drive map to the new server in any letter you want X:
    4. Run Backup using the wizard, select the files you want to move and save the backup on the source server
    5. Click on the created backup file and select restore on the Wizard, select the Advance button and select to restore the files in an alternate location
    6. Browse to the target server mapped drive letter, click next until you confirm the checkmark copy permissions is enable
    7. Restore your files and YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU WANT!!, all files restored will have the exact permissions as in the source server.
    8. This program will copy files, folder with their exact permissions but not the shares.
    9. If you want to copy the shares too, first copy the files to the target server using the above method, then run Hyena tool and use the Copy share to command.
    10. Install this tool in the target server, and when browsing for the target server, must select it from the +Network menu.
    11. Hope this works for you.
