Cannot open MS word on Windoes ME or defragment
Hi, I recently had a problem with my aol software and had to reinstall it, ever since then, I cannot seem to open ms word without it crashing and freezing before the program has opened, not only that when I try to defragment my computer since ti has suddenly become so slow, it shows that it is working, but after 3 days it still shows 9% complete.
What do i do?

Have you tried reinstalling word? As far as defragmenting, try running in safe mode (or go into task manager and stop any unneeded processes).
Probability factor of one to one...we have normality, I repeat we have normality. Anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem.

Cant defrag is a number one issue with windows 9x
Reboot to safe mode and do it there where everything is turned off.
As for the word issue do a search for normal.dot and delete all instances and reboot after they are all gone

Sounds like you might have nuked some DLL's.
For defrag, get Diskeeper and you won't have to boot into safemode to run it.
For Word, try this:
1. Rename normal.dot to normal.old .
2. Open Word. Is it okay now? If so, then normal.dot was corrupt. (Word creates a new one when you get rid of the old one, which you did by renaming it.) If you had any customizations in the old normal.dot (now named normal.old), you can copy them into the new normal.dot using the Organizer.
3. If Word is still not working, do a "Repair Office Installation" (found in the installation disk).
For system speed and stability generally, do the following:
-- Delete all temp files (c:\windows\temp\*.tmp, or on XP C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp)
-- Delete temporary internet files (c:\windows\temporary internet files\*.*, or on XP C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files)
-- If you use I.E., click on Tools, Internet Options, Delete Files, select "delete all off-line content", click OK
-- Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Systems Tools, Disk Cleanup
-- Download AdAware, check for updates, run it and remove whatever it finds
-- Periodically empty the browser cache and the java plug-in cache
-- Download Diskeeper and defrag
-- Download, update and turn on SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard (or your spyware removal tool of choice).
