Compaq Memory Match
I have a Compaq Presario 5000 and just having a heck of a time with the memory in it. Shouldn't all 5000 series memory work in it. I find pc 133 won't work at all. You would think any PC 100 would work but I know Compaqs are finicky. I need ideas for memory.

Depends on the model number I think some of the 5000 series had pc 66 or edo ram. That may well be the problem because if the board does take pc66 ram then it wont boot at all with pc100 or pc133. Most pc100 boards would boot on pc133 ram though.

This is a 5001Cl. Says it takes PC100 and you would think 133 would work fine but this isn't the first time Iv'e seen 133 not work on a 100 board.

For Compaq systems I usually order from www.kingston.com as they have tested their memory with the different systems. You can use their memory finder to determine the exact memory to use.

MegaMod
Compaq Presario 5001CL Desktop PC - Product Specifications
System Memory: 64 MB 100 MHz SyncDRAM, three total DIMM slots upgradable to 768 MB (SyncDRAM DIMM required)
Plus, I realize you probably already know this but you might want to read up on DIMM & RIMM requirements for HP and Compaq PCs Just some good basic info there.
Also, Memory Parts Listing for your Presario 5001CL.
179190-001, $96.00, 64MB, 100MHz SDRAM DIMM memory
You should be able to find lots of suitable replacements for this part number.

Are the sticks double sided or single? Could be a problem depending on the size of the stick.
Get me a soldering iron and some duct tape, and I'll see what I can do.

Cheap is right. Hehehe, It is double sided and I also have several other sticks here including one single sided PC 100 Compaq stick that won't work. All the other ones are PC 133 of various brands.

I've got a Compaq 5WV282 with a UWAVE board that I'm reconfiguring. It ran fine running both Compaq and Kingston Value PC100. I'm going to flash the BIOS to allow PC133 (hopefully) but there's also a jumper onboard.

Never noticed the jumper. And what does the jumper do? I seen one for clearing the cmos is all. This board is the kua1251723 and I have found no info anywhere on this board.

It's located to the right of the memory sockets directly over the secondary IDE socket. It's supposed to be for switching the system bus between 100 and 133 Mhz but I think it needs a BIOS flash to actually work. I got the new BIOS from DriverGuide but haven't yet flashed it. I'm a little hesitant since I'm not sure if its a Compaq BIOS or not but luckily I don't actually need the computer, I'm just doing it for kicks.
