I think my PCMCIA combo USB 2.0 and firewire is freezing up my computer

My laptop freezes/hangs up and becomes unresponsive after being idle for a while. I seem to notice the problem when I am logged into my computer. My computer doesn't freeze if it is sitting idle at the Windows XP login screen. I seem to notice my laptop freezes up too when I have a USB 2 device plugged into my computer while I am on the internet. I have to restart my computer by holding down the power button every time this happens! I think the problem may have to do with my USB 2 and firewire combo card which is plugged into one of PCMCIA slots of my laptop. My computer profile is the following:

-Gateway 600 series laptop about (2 1/2 years old, Pentium 4 processor, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB harddrive, it orginally came with USB 1.1 ports, Windows XP professional with SP2 installed,
-I also have a Linksys wireless internet card plugged into one of the PCMCIA slots.
-the other PCMCIA slot has the USB 2.0, firewire combo card plugged into it
(PPA brand, Model # 1110 PCMCIA COMBO USB 2.0 + FIREWIRE CARDBUS
2 USB 2.0 Ports + 2 Firewire (One 6 Pin + One 4 Pin iLink) Ports) The combo card has an external hard drive and a DVD burner plugged into it.

This is so frustrating because I can't leave my computer sitting idle or it will freeze. Since I make home movies on my computer I have to leave the computer sitting for hours at a time in order for the video to render. PLEASE help!

Welcome to wd forums DJ Rebel.

Maybe changing your power options will help ?

You want a screen a bit like this :-

& I think on a laptop that'll have options like 'when on mains power' (or similar) in its power scheme names, & you want to set those to 'never' all the way through.
