Repeating CHKDSK!

Hello all,
I have bought the new Partition Magic Pro 8, however, when I formatted a partition using it, it automatically schedules a chkdsk scan on the next boot.

That's fine, but now chkdsk checks the partition on every startup!

Presumably there is some sort of autoexec file which controls what Windows does on every startup, and PartMagic has not removed the line from it - I'm guessing, and I can never remember on XP whether it uses auotexec.bat or not, I hear so many differrent things.

Are you sure your HDD is OK? Have you checked for bad sectors?

If you are on os windows xp goto start-->run-->type cmd
then in dos window type chkdsk/F. This will chk disk on next boot and fixes any errors whatsoever. However if it does not stop forcing chkdsk at every boot then look for some utility from hd manufacturer and use it to rule out possible disk damage.

i have tried the chkdsk /f, but maybe i should run spinrite on it.

However, I think the damage theory is unlikely, for various reasons I won't go into here (but I will check the drive thoroughly).

Is it not more likely that the file or program that instructs windows to run chkdsk has gone psycho?

I'm afraid the only way to make sure, is to run scandisk and perform a thorough check.

Now is the time to appreciate about 'dirty bits' ! ..

Manually resetting AUTOCHK.EXE for a drive

You can also query the status directly by using FSUTIL DIRTY & I think depending on version you can set it with that, but I'm not sure about clearing it ..

Here spinrite most likely just reset this value which was remaining checked for whatever reason - perhaps as Bluff first thought ?

As you can see in my previous replies, I asked the author of this thread if he checked the drive for physical errors. He said it's probably caused by a corrupted file, folder etc. I told him that the only way to be sure if the drive has physical errors, is scandisk (or any other similar utility). I never said "Don't try anything else! It's a hardware problem, get rid of the drive, get a new one" or something. Then I said I'm glad this turned out to be a software-related problem and I got your comment.
Not funny!!!

I've said I missed the good old times of this forum, but as I can see, some things haven't changed all this time I was away..

Sheesh - what I don't miss about the 'good old days' is flipping post-mortems, when folks decide they've seen some implication ... bluff asked "it not more likely that the file or program that instructs windows to run chkdsk has gone psycho?" you said no, you said the only way was running chkdsk - then I turned up & started on about dirty bits .. as it is indeed the registry 'gone physco' - but I guess you'd need a sense of humour to appreciate that, so not to make anybody look stupid, but to add to the answer given, which from my perspective was incomplete..
