    Cool Socket 939

Guys, is there an advantage of the Socket 939 over the Socket 754.

    Thanks

Thats a good reason, also check here: http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=247 it has a good chart that shows the pros/cons of each.

    A big advantage is :
Socket 939 supports Dual Channel memory where as Socket 754 does not.

    Another good article on it:
    http://www.amdreview.com/reviews.php?rev=3000-3200-90nm

    excerpt:

    Socket 754 CPU:
    • Single Channel Memory only
    • 64bit DDR SDRAM at 100, 133, 166, and 200Mhz
    • Three DIMM's supported
    • 800Mhz Hyper Transport Bus Speed
    • Runs hotter than socket 939 cpu's
    • Consumes more power than socket 939's
    Socket 939 CPU:
    • Dual Channel Memory
    • 128bit DDR SDRAM at 100, 133, 166, and 200Mhz
    • Four DIMM's supported
    • 1000Mhz Hyper Transport Bus Speed
    • Runs cooler than socket 754 cpu's
    • Consumes less power than socket 754's

new socket forth comming alread... something like X2 should enable support for DDR2 amoungst other things...

socket 754 is old school, buying it now will get you a toped out system with no where to upgrade to... 939 will hang on fora while longer

Thanks on the replies, 939 appears the way to go plus PCI E MB.

If you are an 'upgrader' then it is indeed the way , but the VFM choice is currently 754 .

My one word answer earlier was too short

Q...is there an advantage of the Socket 939 over the Socket 754?

    A. Yes there's three:-

Upgradeability (socket 939 is likely to be around longer than 754 or that's what AMD are currently planning).

Temperature (939 chips consume less power & therefore need to disapate less heat).

& performance (939 has 'dual channel memory' & other features which make it faster, but most estimates would say the gain is about 3-5% .. but it depends what you are doing & with what , the benchmark gains get much more favourable for instance if you use 64 bit windoze & you aren't just measuring performance in Quake ! Database applications might show gains more like 15%).

& the reason why not is currently 'bang for buck', as for 'quite a bit less' you can get something that goes almost as fast.

... but yeah your conclusion is right if you are worried about tomorrows computing needs (& you can afford it !) .

Saying that performance gain is aprox 3-5% then possibility I should stay with the socket 754 PCI E, and PCI E VC, then I won't have to put out $300.00 plus for a new CPU.

If you plan on running a dual core chip you will have no choice but to go 939. The dual channel isn't that big of a deal with A64's. The bigger deal with memory is to get low latency....like 2-2-2-5....that is WAY more important then anything else to do with memory. Oh yeah...and BE SURE to enable 1T in the bios.
