DHCP server install issue
http://utilis-it.com/dhcp.gif
Anyone come across this before? Tried Googling without any real success. Driving me mad as nothing is appearing in the event viewer to suggest what is causing this.
This is a W2k domain server, it is the sole server in the domain, all updates applied. I have been receiving this message every time I attempt to install DHCP right from the start after a fresh install.
TIA,
emr

just a shot in the dark - is there another DHCP server on the network - a forgotten about router (linksys, netgear etc) or a dsl modem with dhcp enabled?

There is yes, but only because I can't get DHCP to install on server. I tried already without the router DHCP activated and get the same message.
Thanks for the idea anyway,

I would think that if the W2K server detects a dhcp server - it won't install service. It can detect DHCP server in different ways so you might need to power down your other pc's- diable dhcp and reboot router- then try W2K as only machine on net- also the W2K server needs a static IP address. I've never seen your error before.....
Good Luck - if you figure it out -please post back

I've tried that already, no dice. It has never installed even right after the initial install of W2k when there was nothing else on the network.
Thanks anyway,

I would:
1. make sure your running proper service packs and are up to date.
2. make sure there is no spyware/virus on the system
3. check the event viewer for any odd happenings (even if it apears unrelated)
4. run system file checker to make sure everything is up to date

Hi Matridon,
1 & 3, see first post.
2 It's clean, nightly automated scans.
4 I'll check now.
Thanks,

SFC check outs fine too.
This is a small network so it is no big deal to leave the router managing DHCP but I would really like to now what the hell is causing this.

I also want to make sure that you have a static IP set on the server.

Is it this ? - Error 0x8007000d Occurs During Initialization - maybe ?
& when I think about it, I had several 'very strange happenings' when trying similar myself the other day - then I repeated what I thought I had done & it worked - the 'difference' turned out to be the updated Microsoft installer package (they just re-issued that, due to some 'cock up') - now the error you have 'looks' like an install shield error ? So maybe .. ?

Ok - coincidence it is then - but have you definately got the latest & greatest M$ installer ? 3.1 (v2) ? its a very new update, in the last week or so, there's all that stuff about 'flyweight patching' & previous versions doing this
..In Windows Installer 3.0 and earlier versions, if you applied several major upgrade patches, subsequent installations occasionally failed...
Which has previously driven me nutz !

DHCP error in W2K Server,
Hi,
I've seen this before. I can't remember exactly BUT try the following:
Win2K, try setting up a separate PC with Win2K server without any updates and SP's. during install, choose to install DHCP service when prompted for optional network components. This will give you a better idea of what could be wrong on your current server.
I suspect it could be some other application that you have installed like MS SQL2000 or one of MS's beta software packages.
To also troubleshoot the problem, go throught: nbtstat and ipconfig (good old dos window still helps!).
If you don't try it clean, you will also have difficulties with Exchange and ISA in the future.
