Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) - sound doesn't work after upgraded to XP

I recently upgraded my computer from 98 to XP Pro. After the install, everything worked fine except I had no sound. Going into the Sound and Audio devices Properties in the Control Panel, it says No Audio Device, and has no options for sound playback under the Audio tab, however it shows my card as the default Sound Recording and MIDI music playback device. It also shows the card in the device Manager.

There is a yellow exclamation point next to one entry in the device manager under the Sound, video and game controllers menu, however it is labeled Unknown Device. When I uninstall it and let Windows find it again, it tries to install "MEDIA" and prompts me to insert the Windows XP disk. It fails to install drivers and says the device may not work properly.

Thanks for any help you can give.

are you using an add in card because the A7V uses a via sound driver according to their audio page?

If you are using an add in card can you check that the onboard sound is properly disabled in both bios and device manager

here is the link to the asus audio drivers...
    http://usa.asus.com/download/mbdriver/mb-audio.htm

    VIA VT82C686A/686B Audio controller driver (for A7V, K7M, K7M-RM, K7V, K7V-RM, CUV4X, CUV4X-M)
    viawinx.zip VIA VT82C686A/B Audio controller driver for Win9x, WinME, Win2000, V1.11c.

no xp driver on the asus site but heres the link to the xp driver for that audio
