About to kill my computer
Hello, ive read a few threads about this problem, which i am having about the Intel 82801EB(M) ICH5 AC'97 Audio controller, it is built in to my intel P4 motherboard i belive.
Motherboard- Intel Springdale i865PE
AC'97 Audio Controller: Audio Controller Type - Intel 82801EB(M) ICH5
Codec Name - Analog Devices AD1981b(L)
Computer Type / Model - Sony Viao Model PCV-2232
I have no sound ATM after installing windows home edition, My Ethernet Controller and my Mulitmedia controller device both show up in "Other Devices", with big yellow ?! by both of them. "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."
Well, for my Audio controller, i have done that... didnt find ANY...
So i went to Sony.com For support and to try to find the driver. This is were it gets very annoying, it turns out there is no Model: PCV-2232....So i looked threw many many many diffrent models looking for the right drivers, trying them all. I do happen to remeber that the Driver before ( I think) Was a SoundMAX driver.
So i whent to SoundMAX.com.. Which was at all NO HELP at all. Searched on Google for hours finding Intel SoundMAX Drivers and Trying to install them. Well, for EACH one when it got to 100% installing, an Error pops up "Driver not found!:Please reboot and run this program again." Well i did that.. still the same error.
Then i whent on trying RealTek drivers, which were on some of the models of Sony Viao's...That was the closest i got, it put the hardware in... but at 100% of installing the stuff from Device manager(Reinstall Driver button) my computer shuts off and reboots without installing it. Ive been reading how to fix this for hours and hours now.... getting very mad that none of this is working, ive given up and made a post here(as you can tell..)
Please help!!
If you need anymore info on my computer specs, um ill try to give them but i have no idea really how to find them out.

Welcome to Windrivers Caths

I just set up a pcv-rs430g that's indicated on the front but on the back sony sticker it says model pcv 2232.
did you try the autodetect at sony here?
click on the marketing specifications link on this page does that look like your wee beastie?
if so here is your sound driver
and for future reference here is the home page for your model support at sony

Yes, i have tryed Auto detect a few times, it says "We are sorry, but we were unable to detect your model.
This may happen if you are not using a Sony computer, your browser security settings are interfering with this program or you have a Sony computer model that does not support this feature."
and i am using IE.
Also the PCV-RS430G does look similar, but alittle Newer.
Also trying that driver it says "This driver is not intented for your computer model".
EDIT
Also i tryed your solution to a similar problem in the thread below this one, after doing that i got the same error:
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

OK, we do it the harder way Is the machine still in warranty ?
download this and run it it will report on what your machine is. Post what there is about the motherboard and any model identification it comes up with.

ok here is the asus version for that motherboard. You will need to unzip it then run the setup.exe in the unzipped files.

If there is no label on it... it might suggest that this machine has been upgraded and is technically no longer a sony...

It's beginning to sound like the sound chip is dying...
Remove the speakers/mic/line in from the back so there is nothing plugged into the sound card.
Go to safe mode (press f8 a few time before the splash screen). Control panel - add/remove programs - remove any and all references to sound drivers, sound max and ac97. Now into device manager, uninstall the devices (if the uninstaller in add/remove didn't work) but do not uninstall the other codecs. Remove or uninstall any unknown or ! devices.
Shut down, and get into the bios setup and disable the onboard sound - this step is important and I don't remember how Sony allows you into bios - could be del key, f10, f2, alt f2... check you manual.
Onboard sound may be found under pci devices (it is technically a pci device) and it may have another entry elsewhere as SB sb16 emulation and/or midi or dos sound. Disable em all. Save and exit, boot to normal mode
When it's got fully to desktop there should be no detection of sound or other devices, if there is, you missed something. Repeat above until you boot the machine and it doesn't auto detect and the device manager shows no sound card/ac97/soundmax/adi device.
Shut down, re- enable the sound in bios. Save, exit, boot to normal mode. Cancel the auto detect and run the setup.exe again.

OK, you just formatted... with what? XP? Did you install the motherboard drivers? Or was this using the recovery disks?
