Hard Drive not showing it's used space correctly

my Hard Drive not showing it's used space correctly,

i got a 60 GB hard drive, and i highlight all file to check the space used, it used only about 30 GB but it only have 9 GB space left, why is that, i thought it should be 30 GB free not 9?

can anyone tell me what should i do to free up the space, i already do empty recycle bin, norton, checkdisk........ but still the same.

if you don't have hidden and system files showing you will not be highlighting all the folders. Empty your temp internet files .... oh and if you use p2p, check you are not a repository...

It's when you use p2p software and in reality, it is using you as a file server, unscrupulous users have access to your machine and store files on it which are hidden in normal use.

    Not knowing your OS...
    Reboot and press F8.
Choose booting from a DOS prompt.
    Win98..run scandisk
    WinXP..run chkdsk /f
Sounds to me that you have file system errors that haven't been cured.
    Good luck.

It sounds like somehow or other are running chkdsk in read only mode, if this is an NTFS volume you need to boot from your windows system disk or set chkdsk to do a complete scan on restart, from inside windows.
