    Question no active mixer device

    Hi There,
I am trying to fix a sound card to a old
PC/Win 95 which didn't have audio card earlier. Tried couple of ISA cards.

When tried to execute volume control windows gives the following message:
    -----
"There are no active mixer device available. You may install or activate mixer device from the control panel."

    "This application will now exit."
    -----

Tried installing the card multiple times.
(tried creative labs first and then now trying Crystal chipset audio card from wavetable/pine stereo sound card)

After installing the card and the drivers

Checked the Control Panel/System/Device Manager/Sound Card & etc.
Everything it says: Device is working properly.

    Checked Control panel/Multimedia/Audio properties is
Grayed out can't increase volume or selected

Checked Control Panel/Multimedia/Advanced/Mixer selected the Mixer properties
Status: Driver is enabled nut inactive due to unknown problem.

Tried to run *rmi file from WINDOWS/Media/*rmi

Widows media player plays but no volume out of the card.

I tried to play *.wav file it complains :

" Sound recorder can't record or play back
no sound device. Click "Add New Hardware" on Control Panel."

The PC is an HP VECTRA model pentium 166MHz
    If it helps.

Any help is appreciated. How to active the volume control.

    Thanks

Try going into control panel, add/remove programs, windows setup and remove all multimedia components. Shut down the computer and restart. Go back and reinstall all multimedia components and see if it works.

    Thumbs up

    Hi RGK01,
I followed you method (remove and reinstalling Multimedia) it works. Thanks a lot.

Now my next question is the volume out of my pasive speakers is too low even at maximum volume on the mixer(volume control). Is there
a way to get more volume out of my Crystal 4235 XQ3 audio chip ??.

    Thanks

Volume from the sound card is limited to 3 or 4 watts, you need to purchase a set of ampliflied speakers (which have a volume control on them) in order to get more volume.

However, some sound cards have a jumper on them to change for amplified or non amplified speakers, if it is set to amplified speakers you will barely get any sound at all.
