    DVD-RW won't read DVDs/CDs

    Hi All,

I've got a problem with my Dell Inspiron 53OS, which is operating with Windows Vista. The problem is that the DVD-RW won't read any DVDs or CDs!!! The drive spins a while, stops, spins and then eventually just gives up. If I go to the device manager and click on the DVD-RW it always tells me to insert a disc (even though there's a disc in it), and the properties tells me that this device is working properly and is enabled. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Usually, cleaning the filters is a good first step.

    Welcome to Windrivers Tendo
Are any of the CD or DVDs you have tried shop bought? If not, try with a shop bought one. The symptoms you are describing sound like you are putting -R disks in a drive that can only read +R... in which case is the laptop in warranty? If so, get on to Dell - sounds like it's got a hardware problem if it is doing that with CDs as well.

    Hey guys,

    Thanks for the feedback.

CCT - No error messages come up when I insert a disc, it simply tells me to insert a disc or cancel, so when I put in a disc, the same message appears, so when I press cancel, it ejects the disc.

NooNoo - Yeah, i'v tried discs that were burnt and discs that were bought from shops, it doesn't read any of them.

Hmmm...so you think its a hardware fault? It used to read discs and then all of sudden it didn't anymore. Strange. I hate computers!

That is how it goes with electronics, working fine one minute, half dead the next.

The only other way to test this is to get a bootable cd rom and try and boot the laptop from it, if it reads the disk at boot, then there is something wrong with the windows installation... but from your symptoms, I am pretty sure it's a hardware problem. If you test it with a boot cd and it doesn't work, that is final proof of a hardware fault.
