Moving Boot drive to different SCSI controller...

My PC boots from a 9.2 GB Seagate Cheetah drive attached to a Tekram DC390U2W controller. The drive is U160 capable, but the controller isn't, so I'm running at Ultra2-Wide speeds.

To squeeze a little more performance out of my current rig, I'd like to install an Adaptec 29160 controller and move the boot drive onto it.

Can I do this without reinstalling the O/S (Win2K)?

I remember running into problems in the past with moving Win2K drives between systems and being unable to boot, although these cases involved IDE drive moving between motherboards. Will install the Adaptec card into an existing empty slot, loading the drivers, then moving the drive onto it avoid this problem.

Assuming no raid, that sounds like a plan to me

    Thumbs up

Thank you Garak for the cdrom lead on seagate diagnostics. I have a
laptop that does not have a floppy drive, but does have a seagate harddrive

Installed the new card, loaded the drivers and swung the cabling over to the new card. Success!

Only obstacle I encountered was the 29160 card was running my drive in narrow, asynchronous mode, but a firmware update to the card cured that problem.

    Thanks!
