Yeah I checked the results of each of them in turn. I'd also swapped the ribbon cable to check that too but it didn't help.
It was an odd problem. The computer would need rebooted 4-6 times before getting Windows to load. The reset switch didn't suffice and the PC had to be physically switched off and on again each time. All the hardware tests I ran on the hard disk passed without error. I have a suspicion Windoze might have become confused due to a Partition Magic job I did to convert a fat32 partition to ntfs, but it worked ok for a while after that. Guess I'll never know for sure...

That could be a powersupply problem ... or the wrong voltage on the cpu...

Aye, Garak had suggested that, however an email I got today from the owners says that the computer has started first time (ie no more 4 on and offs) on a number of occasions since the repair install of Windows, so I'm guessing it was more to do with the boot files.
The CPU settings are at default in the BIOS.
