    raid array setup

I have a KG7 raid board from abit. I have a couple of identical 20GB drives laying around and have decided to toss them in and set up a 40GB stripe for video files and maybe applications. nothing crucial. I plan to still keep XP on the WD 40GB single drive.

the question is if I'm not going to have an OS on that array and it's not bootable, do I need to do anything with XP. If I set up the array in the raid bios, I should be able to boot right to XP as normal then format and partition it with disk management console right?

Hardware RAID is the best way to go. Once it is configured, Windows only sees it as a single drive, so yes, you could just format it in disk admin like normal.

Just how many disks make up a couple? If only two, I don't see how you are going to get 40 GIG out of a striped set...

    raid 0 striping
Hard Disk Requirements: Minimum of two hard disks (some may support one drive, the point of which escapes me); maximum set by controller. Any type may be used, but they should be of identical type and size for best performance and to eliminate "waste".

Array Capacity: (Size of Smallest Drive * Number of Drives).
is this misinformation. raid 0 doubles the smallest drive in the array and splits the reads and writes up. so 2 20Gb drives = 40GB. Isn't this correct or have I been mislead all along.

just for the record 20gb + 20GB = 40GB. it is RAID-0, there is no parity, so you don't lose any of the space. teh onbaord raid controllers on the abit boards support Raid 0(stripe set), Raid 1(mirror), and Raid 0+1(mirrored stipe set)

I didn't think I was loosing my mind! but then when ya know questioned it, I started to doubt myself and had to double check

he's probably coming at it from an enterprise / server enviroment where RAID 0 would never be implemented and RAID 5 rules the roost.

Woops. I have heard of the stripe, but didn't use it before. I forgot that RAID can be used for performance only, thus no space used for parity. Sorry to have confused_ya/me.

Just don't get your hope up for faster gaming. Raid 0 speeds up the write times NOT the read. So for Video it is great.

yeah that's my main focus with it. just to piss around with video editing and SVCD creation. with the baby on the way I know we'll be shooting a lot of video so I should practice. I do the odd bit with cool edit pro and audio editing every so often too.

this box will be a bit ridiculous when it's done. I've already got the 40GB OS and app drive. The 80 GB MP3 drive will be going in and also the 40GB stripe set, so I'm going to have 160GB at my disposale in one machine.

I remember when I thought 3GB was huge
