x3350 Lexmark printer and other problems now
SFC wants to run everytime I boot now. I get through it and reboot and it prompts me again to run it but it lets me cancel it. The XP CD has been in the DVD drive during SFC and the DVD drive works.
Now my CD rom drive is not reading CD's but the device manager says it is running. My BIOS does not let me select my DVD player as a boot drive so I
can't get to boot from the XP CD to reinstall.

ok... if you shut down your machine and remove the cd drive, and set the DVD as master, can you now boot from the DVD drive?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

x3350 Lexmark Printer
Good news! It works and thank you so much for the help! I repaired my XP but didn't reload the entire OS and that did it. I still go into scanboot utility when I reboot and all I need to do is cancel it. I installed a new Sony CD R/W drive and
that allows me to get through the utility without errors. I don't get prompted to reboot though after the scanboot utility finishes. I also received an error code during the XP repair called COM Setup Error, Error code = 0x8007007f.
Not sure if that has anything to do with the scanboot util problem.
Regardless of the above errors everything is working ok now.

I know the cause - just not the fix!!
I have just seen the same symptom here at work..
we have some usb printers that get the same problem installing (when before we never had any issues.)
I believe it has to do with the cleanspl.exe script. it breaks windows!
we ran it on about 50 pc's to wipe printers and enter new ones.. All looked fine as most use network printing...
usb printers now won't install with 'specified port is unknown' error..
Load fine on PC's that have not had cleanspl.exe run..
Most PC's here are imaged clones so it's not like they were installed with different options and drivers!
Anyway.. thought you would like to know my observations to date...
PS: I'm still looking for a fix myself.. if anyone has any ideas based on the testing I have done to date... be very interested in trying it..
will try a windows repair/overlay install in the coming few days.. see if that helps.
AJ XP Pro SP2 btw
